How do I paint an abstract expressionist painting? ?
I tried doing a pencil drawing first and paint within the lines…but it was just awful. Now I am thinking of just picking my paint colors and surround myself with photos of my subject and just paint as I feel inspired….and clean up later with outlinesin black….but the thing with that is…I would overlap and have to paint over other colors so maybe let it dry before overlapping? should I stick to geometic shapes…??
I use oil paints and stretched canvas. I can do acrylic too, but prefer oil. Oil takes days to dry coats if I needed it to dry between layers or to overlap. ???
Your canvas should be tacked on a wall or on an easel so you can stand up while painting. Brush strokes conveying emotion and a sense of movement are a part of it. Thin paint, & thick, let it dry and add layers of colors. If you don’t like it, scrape it down and go again. I’m of course assuming your using oils. With acrylics its a bit harder, because of the fast drying, plus the colors aren’t as rich or nuanced as oils.
