What kind of music is popular in Star Trek The Original Series?
I was watching Star Trek “The Conscience of the King” and in the lounge there was Big Band music playing. Is that what is popular?
Music was a popular recreation on the enterprise, with lots of diverse styles from across the galaxy. They seemed to prefer live music as apposed to canned subspace transmissions, for its social interaction.
At that point in time, at least for those present on the enterprise, popular music contained an element of elegance, mixed with the traditional.
Spock would often play his Vulcan Lute, and was also good on the piano.
Uhura was popular among the crew for her singing voice, which she would use to entertain small groups with classics like “Beyond Antares” or by improvising songs on the spot. She also occasionally would play Spock’s Vulcan Lute.
The crew was proud of its diversity, and some crew members enjoyed the music of their regional ancestors, such as Reilly singing old irish folk songs, and Scotty enjoying bagpipes.
The crew was also open to other various music styles, thoroughly enjoying the little jam-session with Dr. Sevrin’s protege Adam, where he sang lively folk songs with his band of space-hippies, like “I’m here”, “Heading out to Eden” and “Hey Brother”.
