Egyptian Cats
It seems natural to mention cats and Egypt in the same sentence. Certainly, both cats and Egypt share a long history. Most cat experts believe that Ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats. At first, they brought cats into their barns and households because of cats’ ability to catch mice and other critters. Later, Ancient Egyptians – especially the wealthy – started to adopt cats as pets.
Cats became so important that Egyptians went into mourning when the family cat died. It is believed that these Egyptian cats were the ancestors of the Egyptian Mau, a modern breed of cat. Indeed, paintings on tombs and other buildings showcase spotted, muscular cats, which look very similar to the modern Mau.
Felines were so revered in Ancient Egypt to the point where people who harmed cats were punished with death. However, according to many experts, Egyptians did not worship animals per se. Rather, they thought that animals embodied certain divine qualities and used animals to portray those attributes.
Egyptian cats became so important that they were believed to be direct representatives of Bastet, the cat goddess of protection, fertility and children. Bastet, also known as Bast, was depicted as a woman with the head of a cat or just as a desert cat.
The other feline goddesses are Sekhmet, Bastet’s sister, and Mafdet. Sekhmet was depicted as a woman with the head of a lioness. She represented a darker side of the divine. Unlike the protective Bastet, she was associated with devastating power. Mafdet, the cheetah goddess, represented swift justice and judgment. She was also known as the panther goddess.
Egyptian cats indeed bring to mind images of ancient myths and magical beauty. If you or your cat loving friends love cats <i>and</i> Egypt, you may find Egyptian cat inspired prints, figurines and statues to give as gifts. There are also books about the role cats played in Ancient Egypt and about the feline goddesses mentioned here. These make great cat lover gifts, too.
