Upon inspection, the golf ball looks like a solid sphere made out of some plastic like material. Most people do not bother more about it, as long as they can hit it and make it land where they wanted it to. And we definitely do not bother too much about the history of this ball. And so, we have no clue about the changes that this ball has gone through over the years, to metamorphose into what we call the call ball today.

This ball goes back three hundred years and finds its roots in Scotland. At first the golf ball was made with wood. It was in fact made of select variety of hardwood. The golf clubs of that age were made of wood as well, so you can imagine how tedious the game then was. Although this equipment was not very difficult to construct, it wasn’t very efficient as well, and the golf ball traveled only to a maximum of about a hundred yards at that time. In spite of these short comings, the wooden golf ball was all that we had for over a hundred years.

However, in the seventeenth a few Scotsmen introduced the feathery kind of golf ball. Did you know it was made of boiled chicken and goose feathers as well? People believed that if feathers could make a chicken or a goose fly, they would help a golf ball fly as well. The outside was constructed of cowhide and stitched up before it was packed with feathers. Leather stretches when it gets wet, and this helped people to shape it into a round ball. The ball was then painted to give it a good appearance and finish. This kind of ball traveled to up to two hundred yards, so it was an improvement on the wooden variety. The down side was that since it took so much time to make them they were quite expensive as well.

In the 1800s the gutta ball was made out of the sap of the Sapodilla tree. It was heated and molded to the spherical shape. People soon realized that the balls traveled further with irregular shapes, so they began constructing the hammered versions of this ball, which flew to further distances than the feather variety. Since they didn’t get damages with water as well, they were quite popular.

The bramble design ball was made just like the gutta but they were more symmetrical and traveled further.

The rubber ball had a soild rubber core, and a gutta layer on top, and later made with the Balata instead of gutta. This version first saw the dimples, bringing with it the design of the modern day golf ball.

The balls we use today are made of titanium, and made with 2, 3 or 4 layers. Their weight and size need to meet regulations.
