Giclèe Printing vs Screen Printing?
What are the pros and cons of both these printing methods if I had to choose between the two for illustrations that I do?
Giclèe printing relies on a digital input (ie the file that is printed has to be in a digital form), screen-printing can be done entirely by hand or become as complex as you like involving various mechanical originations including photographic. A silkscreen can be a costly business depending on the number of colours, there can be a lot of wastage due to error, but it does have a tangible hand-produced quality about it.
Essentially when producing an illustration (or any design) you need to decide on the production process before you start work, quite often the process will drive aspects of the work from the beginning of the job. However, to break it down, a giclèe has the advantage of being useful for short or long(ish) runs (with some economy for quantity) apart from the digital file there is little storage requirement, a print on demand rather than a number of prints which require storage. A screenprint, unless a number are produced and then stored will need all the screens storing (which can be costly) and due to the economies of scale can be costly for small runs.
