I have a Jack Russel-Corgi mixed dog and she is having back and or upper hip problems what could it be?
She within no time flat went from fine to really bad. Took her to the vet and he said possible slipped disc which possibly required surgery that had a 50% chance of working. We took her to the chiropractor and he said her lower lumbar is out. Vet said during the day and night keep her medicated, the chiropractor said don’t medicate her during the day because if she has some pain it will limit her movement. She moves either way medicated or not. She hasn’t lost feeling to her heind legs but shes not using them. She is panting quite a bit. I’m at a serious loss, I love the dog to death and she is only 5 far to early to be put down, yet I don’t have the money to throw on a 5 grand surgery that may or maynot work. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas of where to do from here I would greatly apreciate it and so would my dog. Thank you.
The panting concerns me, panting is often a sign of pain. If you cannot find a way to relieve the pain, you must put her down for her own sake.
The paralysis itself is not as much of a problem. If she has control of her bladder and bowels the rest can be managed.
Follow the vet’s advice regarding the medication. I also suggest STRICT crate rest while she is on the meds, as they will make her feel better and she may do more than she should an injure herself further. This means she is in the crate 24/7 for about 3 weeks, only coming out to do her business. This is tough, I know, I’ve done it with my dog and I’m currently doing it with a friend’s dog, but it is in her best interests to keep her quiet while she heals.
My experience with the surgery was positive. Since your dog has feeling in her feet and control over her bodily functions I’d think she’s probably a good candidate too. After the surgery I had to walk Myrtle in a sling so that she could move her legs if she wanted but was fully supported by me. I also did range of motion exercises with her legs (the vet should be able to show you how). Supervised swimming is also a good exercise for recovering back surgery patients. Crate rest while healing is important. Myrtle eventually recovered, but always walked like she was coming home from a bar.
If you really cannot afford the surgery, and if she is not in pain, then don’t give up yet. I’ve known several dogs who recovered full use of their legs after their owners had been told their dog would never walk again. My Myrtle injured her back a second time, and I couldn’t afford to do the surgery again. Since she was not in pain and otherwise healthy I took her home, gave her crate rest and did the sling-walking and leg exercises with her. I also gave her a homeopathic remedy (can’t remember which one), I don’t know if it helped at all but I figured it couldn’t hurt. She did get up and walk again and was good for the rest of her life.
Even if your dog does not regain the use of her legs, you can get her a cart (doggy wheelchair). I’ve seen dogs in carts, they zoom around like nothing is wrong and are quite happy that way. Dogs are amazingly adaptable.
Please discuss the pain issue with your vet. One of my girls was paralyzed, but was in terrible pain that could not be stopped so I had to put her down.
