Nail biting is no doubt one of the most common habits around. Most often than not, people think that biting is a way to relieve stress. Other such habits manifesting stress and nervousness could be thumb-sucking, nose picking, hair twisting or pulling, tooth grinding or skin picking. Nail biting besides showing stress and excitement might also be due to boredom or inactivity.
Genially instinctive and one engages in it without even thinking about it. You could easily check it. Most often you would find people watching television or talking on the phone and biting nails without even thinking about it. The problem is that biting is not just about biting nails, it also develops into cuticle biting and biting of flesh around nails.
There are many who claim that biting nails has no side effects on the nails as such as long as you do not damage the nail bed but the problem is related to your health. The most common problem with biting your nails is paronychia or infection of the skin. Warts might also develop around the nail bed. There are a number of ways to stop right from medications to therapies.
If you want to stop biting the main thing to understand is that there is nothing clinically wrong with nail biting as such as long as you do not damage the nail beds and cuticles. It is mostly due to anxiety and compulsive behavior. It is always a good idea to take some professional help in such cases. Behavioral therapy and medications are the way to go.
Finger biting is one of the most common habits and almost everyone goes through it at one point of time or other. Finger nail biting is marked by biting of fingernails or even toenails. It has been marked that finger is generally due to nervousness, hunger, stress, or even boredom. Finger nail biting could also be manifestation of mental or emotional disorder. Technically speaking nail biting is known as chronic onychophagia.
Biting your nails is seen the most in adolescents. More than forty percent of the adolescents have the habit of finger nail biting. It is about 25% to 35% amongst children between the ages of seven and ten. And what is more, 5% of the older adults have this habit of finger nail biting.
Finger biting shows good result with medications. New anti-depressants like clomipramine, sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine, citalopram, fluvoxamine, escitalopram, venlafaxine and nefazodone. These anti-depressants work very well with Trichotillomania and OCD. Most often anti-psychotics in small amounts are used with these anti-depressants to treat schizophrenia. Some of these anti-psychotics are olazapine, risperidone, quetiapine, aripiprazole and ziprasidone. And it must never be deduced that since you are being given medications that are used to treat schizophrenia, you are in some sort suffering from the same malaise.
Finger biting is one of the major reasons of infection. It transfers germs from your nails to your mouth. It is also the case with nail tools like files. Suppose it is being used on different people and someone has some infection in their nails. So, when it is used on you, the germs get transferred to you and when you put your fingers in your mouth, you transfer the germs to your mouth. It is always a good idea to stop finger biting and the best time is now.
