How do I stop my cat from meowing all the time?
He’s a 5 year old neutered male tuxedo cat… he sounds like he is dying, he meows for hours and especially at night, and only stops if i pick him up. At night (like 3am) he does this a lot and if i put him on the bed he runs back into the living room to meow for a few more hours. its not really possible to get another cat, and i need sleep! help!
Sounds like one of my cats. My girl kitty has an obsession with the bathroom and wants people to go in there to pet her. She will sit in there and meow/yowl loudly to get attention. What I do when my cat does this is either ignore her, or I will go pick her up and bring her into another room to get petted, to teach her it is OK to get attention in rooms other than the bathroom.
It sounds like your kitty is doing the same thing, meowing for attention, since you stated he stops when you pick him up. I would suggest you make sure he gets plenty of attention during the daytime, when it is more acceptable to do so. Ignore him when he meows at night. If you cant sleep through the noise, get some ear plugs (and make sure you can still hear your alarm clock through them!) Your kitty has learned that when he meows alot, he gets attention. It doesnt matter to him that its in the middle of the night, since cats are nocturnal anyways. If you ignore the unwanted meowing, he will learn that it does not produce the response he wanted. Instead, pet him or pay attention to him when he is being quiet and peaceful. I do this to my kitty, and although it has not stopped the bathroom yowling 100%, she definately does it much less than she used to.
