Why is it that a small 19th century Dutch Landscape painting can be a more emotionally more satisfying..?
experience than a giant sized modern painting?
It really depends on your personal frame of mind.
But consider this:
There are many people who want everything laid out for them, explained in simple terms they can accept and understand without putting too much thought into the subject. There is nothing wrong with this. It’s just a part of human nature.
There are people who want to be told what to think and how to feel when looking at specific art, listening to a simple country or pop song, etc.
Then there are those who would rather listen to complex classical music that expects you to think, that expects you and your imagination to provide the back story, to fill in the details mentally and emotionally. Good modern art, from the surreal art of Dali to a Jasper John collage, asks you (and almost demands) to think, to make a personal and emotional investment to enjoy the art.
While there is nothing wrong with looking at art from either viewpoint it certainly is ‘easier’ to enjoy a realistic, beautiful landscape that doesn’t require a great deal of thought to understand what the artist is saying than it is to try to absorb yourself into the world of a modern painting.
Sometimes I like my music or art simple and uncomplicated. But sometimes I want a painting to grab me and force me to think for myself. Likewise, I want my mind to travel through unknown emotional landscapes when listening to Beethoven or Mahler.

Pieces in a Modern Style $13.96 William Orbit’s Pieces in a Modern Style is an ambient album that rejigs 11 works by classical composers in a particularly tacky fashion. Even though Orbit has proved his mettle as an innovative and exciting producer for others–Blur’s 13 and Madonna’s Ray of Light–this is an ungainly meeting of the sublime and the absurd that, frankly, doesn’t work. Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” Ludwig v… |
